Conscious Consumerism: 5 simple guidelines.

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

Conscious consumerism has a vital role to play in responding to the current exploitation faced by the planet, workers and animals in the world. Conscious consumerism, sometimes called ethical consumerism or conscientious consumerism is shopping in ways one believes makes a positive social, environmental or economic impact. Ethical consumerism is understanding that there are humans and resources behind the products we use and making our choices accordingly.

Social media and the internet has made the conscious consumerism moment very fancy and inaccessible. The most common misconception is you need to purchase items that are specially designed for a conscious lifestyle but its not true. It starts with what you already at home. The items we use on an everyday basis create a lot of waste and considering the above situation, shopping for our everyday needs more sustainably can be overwhelming but here are some simple guidelines to follow in making better decisions for the planet and yourselves.

1.Refuse unnecessary purchases

Most retail stores are designed make you walk through all the lanes to make impulse purchases. We can consume less by refusing to buy what isn't necessary to us. We need to understand that even the most eco-friendly choices have some carbon footprint attached to it. Step one of shopping more sustainable is simply asking yourself...is this a necessary purchase? If the answer is no, then why buy it?

2. Reuse what you already have

Like I mentioned previously, conscious consumerism starts with what you already have at home. Need a new planter? Reuse your milk carton or shampoo bottle. Need a wash cloth? Reuse a worn out garment. The possibilities are endless once you become more observant towards what you throw into the trash and how you can upcycle them.

3. Reduce your purchases

In the long run, this will not only reduce your carbon footprint but save you a lot of money. When restocking, shop in bulk with minimal packaging. Avoid shopping online as they come wrapped in plastic that can't be reused. However if you need to shop online, consolidate orders to reduce packaging waste and order items that aren't available in your near by walk-in store.

4. Replace with better options

Sustainable swaps for your everyday items have become more accessible than never before. Need a new dress? Is it possible to shop second-hand?

Is there low-waste alternative to replace this item with? Can you replace your regular toothbrush with a bamboo brush?

Ask these questions and do your research when you want to make a swap with a better choice. Another great idea is to host a party with your family and friends where you can exchange or borrow items so that they don't end up in the trash.

5. Social Media

Social media is not a guideline here but sharing your sustainable journey with others and the swaps you made as a conscious consumer educates others. If you aren't comfortable on social media, simple talking with your friends and family also empowers them to make better choices for themselves and the planet.

I really hope that you find these above guidelines helpful and implement in your daily life. I am not perfect myself but efforts and most importantly collective efforts make a significant difference. If you have any issue regarding my post, you can reach out to me at renewblue7@gmail.com.
